Community Safety Volunteer - Westminster

Areas covered: Westminster and surrounding tourist areas.

Time commitment: Minimum 4 hours per month (typically weekends)

Role type: Public-facing, paired patrols, non-confrontational


About the role

Street Safe London is recruiting Community Safety Volunteers to support a visible, reassuring presence in Westminster and key tourist locations, including bridges and high-footfall areas frequently targeted by pickpockets and scammers

.

Volunteers operate in pairs, wear high-visibility Street Safe London jackets, and patrol clearly defined areas to deter opportunistic crime, support visitors, and help vulnerable people access appropriate help.


This role is preventative and observational — volunteers do not enforce the law, intervene physically, or place themselves at risk.


What you will be doing

  • Providing reassurance, directions, and local information to visitors
  • Offering practical crime prevention advice in busy tourist areas
  • Acting as a visible deterrent to opportunistic crime such as pickpocketing and scammers
  • Supporting victims by helping them understand how to report incidents
  • Observing and reporting concerns to your team leader in line with training and procedures
  • Signposting homeless individuals and other vulnerable people to relevant support services


How patrols work

  • Volunteers always work in pairs
  • Patrols take place in defined areas (including bridges and nearby landmarks)
  • High-visibility jackets and guidance are provided
  • Clear escalation and reporting procedures are in place
  • Focus is on engagement with public, reassurance, and crime prevention


Training and vetting

All public facing volunteers are fully trained and vetted, including:

  • Enhanced DBS check
  • Safeguarding awareness
  • Data protection and GDPR
  • De-escalation and personal safety techniques
  • Observation and situational awareness
  • Basic First Aid
  • Bleed kit awareness and training

Ongoing support and supervision are provided


Who this role suits

This role is ideal for people who:

  • May have limited free time or are happy to work a few hours once a month at the weekend (Retired, students etc)
  • Enjoy engaging with the public in busy environments
  • Are calm, approachable, and observant
  • Want to contribute to community safety
  • Are interested in crime prevention, safeguarding, or public protection

No previous experience is required.
